Climate Bridge Helps Sinopec Nanhua Release the First Carbon Neutral Rubber Antioxidant Products in China

Time:2022-05-12 View:360

Sinopec Nanjing Chemical Industries Co., Ltd., commonly known as Nanhua, recently achieved a significant milestone. Two of its Orchid Brand rubber antioxidant products, antioxidant 6PPD and antioxidant TMQ, have achieved carbon neutrality. Moreover, they have been formally recognized with product carbon neutrality certificates from the TÜV SÜD. Throughout the entire process, we had the privilege of delivering comprehensive consulting and offsetting services.

Embarking on the journey to carbon neutrality begins with a product’s life cycle assessment (LCA). For Nanhua's products, the carbon footprint evaluations occurred in strict accordance with ISO 14067: 2018 and PAS 2050: 2011 protocols. These protocols cover the entire range of GHGs emitted. From raw material acquisition to product manufacturing, and all the way through to transportation, usage, and waste treatment.

Following this evaluation, Climate Bridge helped to procure and retire the necessary carbon credits under the globally recognized Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard. This leading standard ensures the credits adhere to the PAS2060: 2014 offset criteria, which includes stringent assessments for additionality, permanence, leakage, double counting, and independent third-party verification.

Appreciating the opportunity presented by this project, we, in partnership with TÜV SÜD, assisted Nanhua with navigating the complex task of identifying its product emissions. This collaboration equipped Nanhua with a detailed understanding of its products' carbon footprints, which lay a strong foundation from which to further improve its energy efficiency and optimize their manufacturing practices. Strengthening the company’s desire to help lead a shift towards a zero-carbon rubber antioxidant industry.

In China's evolving dual carbon landscape, companies with high-energy consumption may find themselves facing redundancy. Forward-thinking enterprises are therefore turning to their product lines as anchor points, crafting carbon neutral offerings that not only delivers environmental benefits but also fortifies their competitive edge in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace.

We are proud of our contributions to the collaboration, having become familiar with such projects and aspirations since 2008 when we helped establish China's first carbon-neutral hotel, the URBN Hotel. Over the years, this expertise has been sought for marquee events such as the Mobile World Congress Shanghai (MWCS), the 6th International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Congress (FCVC), and the 14th National Games of China. Blue-chip companies like Siemens, H&M, SK Hynix, Yili, Samsung, and CATL counting themselves among the beneficiaries of Climate Bridge's expertise in carbon neutrality solutions.
